The story of M begins in 1972, when BMW Motorsport GmbH was created with one clear ambition: to maximise BMW performance on the world’s racetracks.
Success came quickly. The BMW 3.0 CSL became an icon of the new racing division, combining lightweight construction, power and unmistakable aerodynamics – and taking BMW M colours onto the track for the first time. But racing was only the beginning.
The lessons learned in motorsport began finding their way onto the road. The BMW M1 arrived in 1978 as the first car developed completely in-house by BMW M, followed by cars such as the original BMW M3 and M5, and more recently, XM – bringing racing technology and everyday driving together in a way that would come to define M.
More than five decades later, that philosophy remains at its heart.
